Information

This very rare armchair, model 509, was designed by Kai Lyngfeldt Larsen and produced by Søborg Møbler in Denmark. An exceptional example of Danish mid-century modern design, the chair seamlessly combines sculptural form, material honesty, and ergonomic refinement—hallmarks of Lyngfeldt Larsen’s approach to furniture design.

The armchair features a distinctive, organically contoured seat and backrest, crafted to offer both visual lightness and physical comfort. The seat is upholstered in a rich, reddish-brown leather that has developed a deeply textured patina over time. Signs of use—including scratches, darkened areas, and wear—enhance its vintage character and highlight the natural aging process of high-quality leather. These characteristics underscore the authenticity of the piece and serve as a visual record of its history.

Contrasting with the warm tones of the leather, the outer shell of the chair is finished in black, providing a strong graphic silhouette. The black shell remains structurally sound, with only minor surface signs of wear visible upon close inspection. A distinctive cut-out in the lower portion of the backrest contributes to the chair’s sculptural appeal while also aiding lumbar ventilation and comfort.

The base is composed of four slender, angled legs in chromed steel. The steel has developed a natural patina with subtle signs of age-related wear, including minor corrosion, scratches, and discoloration—features typical of vintage metalwork and consistent with the age of the chair. The combination of metal and organic form reflects the modernist inclination toward mixing materials and achieving both strength and elegance through structural economy.

Kai Lyngfeldt Larsen (1920–2001) was known for his thoughtful, often understated designs that emphasized comfort and high craftsmanship. His collaboration with Søborg Møbler resulted in a series of refined furniture pieces that are now recognized for their technical sophistication and lasting aesthetic appeal. Model 509 stands out for its unique formal qualities and the way it integrates industrial and artisanal components into a cohesive whole.

The dimensions of the chair are 52.5 cm wide, 53 cm deep, 75.5 cm high, with a seat height of 45 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 20.7 inches wide, 20.9 inches deep, 29.7 inches high, and a seat height of 17.7 inches.
