Hans Wegner dining chairs
Set of 8 dining chairs model CH-23 designed by Hans Wegner. Produced by Carl Hansen & Son in Denmark.
This set of eight dining chairs, model CH-23, was designed by Danish architect and designer Hans J. Wegner and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark in 1950. The chairs are constructed from a combination of solid oak and teak, with handwoven papercord seats, reflecting Wegner’s mastery of woodworking and his ability to balance aesthetic elegance with structural integrity. The design of the CH-23 chair features a gently curved backrest, crafted from teak, which contrasts with the oak frame. The backrest is attached with visible mortise-and-tenon joinery, a signature detail that highlights the craftsmanship involved in its production. The slightly tapered legs and subtly curved side stretchers contribute to the chair’s stability while maintaining a light, refined appearance. The seat is made from handwoven papercord, tightly woven in a distinctive pattern to ensure durability and comfort.
Hans Wegner was a leading figure in Scandinavian modernism, known for his emphasis on organic forms, expert joinery, and innovative use of materials. His designs were rooted in functionality, but with a sculptural quality that made them timeless and highly sought after.
Carl Hansen & Søn, the manufacturer, has been a key producer of Danish modern furniture, maintaining high standards of craftsmanship and continuing to produce Wegner’s designs with traditional methods. The condition of the chairs shows natural wear consistent with age, with an aged patina on the wood and slight variations in the papercord weaving.
Each chair measures 52.5 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 77 cm in height (20.7 x 19.3 x 30.3 inches), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 inches).
