Information

This rare atomic floor lamp was designed by Trix and Robert Haussmann and produced by Swiss Lamps International in Switzerland in 1956. The piece is a striking example of postwar modernism, blending architectural clarity with sculptural experimentation typical of mid-century Swiss design.

The structure consists of a chromed steel stem supporting a geometric arrangement of intersecting tubular arms that extend radially, each terminating in a large clear glass bulb. The configuration resembles a molecular or atomic structure, reflecting the era’s fascination with scientific imagery and new industrial aesthetics. The combination of polished steel and translucent glass gives the lamp a weightless, spatial quality, while the soft illumination emphasizes its symmetrical construction and reflective surfaces.

Trix and Robert Haussmann were leading figures in Swiss modernist design and architecture. Their work often combined functional rigor with playful and conceptual elements, exploring how industrial materials could be used to create poetic and spatially engaging forms. The “atomic” motif in lighting design became an international symbol of optimism and progress during the 1950s, and this example represents one of the most refined interpretations of that idiom.

The lamp is in good vintage condition with signs of use and a consistent patina on the metal surface. The structure remains solid and the original materials are well preserved, maintaining the lamp’s authentic character.

Diameter 75 cm (29.5 inches), height 165 cm (65 inches).
