This very rare and large ceiling lamp was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1940s. The lamp features a brass frame with an original pleated fabric shade, creating a warm and diffused light. The elongated rectangular form makes it well-suited for placement above a dining table.
Josef Frank was an Austrian-Swedish architect and designer known for his humanistic approach to modernism. His designs often combined functionalist principles with organic forms and rich materials, resulting in timeless and elegant pieces. Svenskt Tenn, the manufacturer, was established in 1924 and became synonymous with high-quality Swedish design, particularly through its long-standing collaboration with Frank.
The brass ceiling mount has a patinated finish, indicative of its age, and features adjustable suspension rods, allowing for height customization. The shade is crafted from pleated fabric, adding texture and a soft diffusion of light, which aligns with Frank’s preference for warm and inviting interiors.
The dimensions of the lamp are 110 cm in width, 41.5 cm in depth, and 79 cm in height (43.3 x 16.3 x 31.1 inches). It remains in well-preserved vintage condition, with minor signs of wear on the brass and fabric consistent with age.
