Information

This rare first edition of the Artichoke ceiling lamp was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by the renowned Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen. Introduced in 1957, the lamp has become one of the most iconic pieces of Scandinavian modern design, celebrated for its sculptural form and exceptional light diffusion. Henningsen, one of the most influential lighting designers of the 20th century, was known for his pioneering work in glare-free illumination and layered shade systems, and the Artichoke represents a culmination of his innovative approach.

The lamp is constructed from copper and features a striking arrangement of 72 precisely positioned leaves, arranged in 12 layers to create its characteristic organic, spherical form reminiscent of an artichoke. Each leaf is carefully angled to conceal the light source while reflecting and diffusing light evenly, producing a soft, glare-free illumination that is both functional and atmospheric. The layered design also adds depth and dimension to the piece, emphasizing its sculptural presence even when unlit.

This example shows a rich patina on the copper surface, a natural result of age and use that enhances the depth and warmth of the material. The condition is good vintage, with signs of wear consistent with its age and original production. Early editions like this one are particularly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts due to their craftsmanship and historical significance.

The Artichoke embodies the principles of mid-century Scandinavian design, combining functional innovation with sculptural elegance. It remains a timeless piece that continues to define modern interiors and is considered one of the most significant lighting designs of the 20th century.

Dimensions are 66 cm wide, 66 cm deep, and 93 cm high (26 x 26 x 36.6 in)
