Information

This is a rare floor lamp, model G-178, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s. Executed in white lacquered metal and brushed aluminum, the lamp exemplifies the designer’s focus on glare-free, atmospheric lighting combined with an architectonic sensibility.

The lamp features a sculptural shade composed of five concentric aluminum louvres, designed to shield the light source while allowing soft diffusion in all directions. The louvres are gently curved and vertically spaced, giving the shade a strong graphic character and contributing to its effective light distribution. The underside of the shade is painted black to further reduce glare and enhance contrast. The columnar stem and round base are finished in white lacquered metal, creating a clean, minimal profile that emphasizes the optical complexity of the shade.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of Sweden’s most prominent lighting designers of the postwar period, renowned for his innovations in soft lighting and his sensitive use of form and material. He began his career as a furniture designer before turning almost exclusively to lighting, and his works are known for their balance of functionality and sculptural form. Jakobsson frequently employed slatted or layered constructions to modulate light, and model G-178 is a clear expression of this principle.

Produced by his workshop in Markaryd, the lamp reflects the high quality and experimental spirit that characterized the company’s output. Jakobsson’s work gained international acclaim during the 1950s and 60s, particularly for designs that promoted a domestic atmosphere of warmth and calm.

The lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of age, including minor surface wear and patina to the lacquer and aluminum elements. It remains structurally intact and electrically functional.

The dimensions are 40 cm in diameter (15.7 inches), 140 cm in height (55.1 inches).
