Hans-Agne Jakobsson floor lamps
This rare pair of floor lamps, model G-20, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The lamps are notable examples of Jakobsson’s distinctive approach to lighting design, characterized by his fascination with diffused light and sculptural forms.
Each lamp features a cylindrical shade composed of stacked, polished brass rings, creating a segmented lantern-like silhouette. The segmented construction not only serves as a decorative element but also controls and diffuses light laterally, casting a soft, layered glow when illuminated. The upper part of the shade is capped with a slightly conical brass top, pierced at the peak by a simple brass rod terminating in a looped ring. This vertical element emphasizes the lamp’s elegant height and adds a functional and sculptural finishing touch.
The lamps are supported by slender brass stems rising from conical iron bases, painted matte black. This contrast in materials and finish—high-polish brass with dark textured iron—underscores Jakobsson’s interest in refined yet elemental material combinations. The newly rewired cords feature twisted black fabric sheathing, consistent with the period aesthetic and offering discreet integration into contemporary interiors.
Condition is excellent throughout. The brass retains its original luster with minor natural patination visible in areas, lending authenticity to the mid-century origin. The iron bases are intact, with no dents or abrasions, and the electrical components have been professionally updated to meet modern safety standards.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a prolific Swedish lighting designer and manufacturer known for his atmospheric, sculptural luminaires. With a background in both architecture and cabinetmaking, Jakobsson developed a highly personal design vocabulary rooted in the Scandinavian tradition of warm, indirect light. His designs for Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB were produced in a variety of materials, with brass playing a central role in his more sculptural and decorative lighting forms, such as the G-20.
Each lamp measures 144 cm in height (approximately 56.7 inches) and 20 cm in diameter (approximately 7.9 inches).
