Information

This is a rare and early floor lamp, model G-198, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The design is an elegant expression of Jakobsson’s signature approach to lighting: merging functionality with a sense of softness and atmospheric presence. The lamp combines solid brass with opaline glass and a textile shade, resulting in a harmonious material composition typical of Scandinavian postwar lighting.

The columnar shaft and bell-shaped trumpet base are executed entirely in brass, with visible signs of patina and surface oxidation that speak to its age and authenticity. The profile is slender and vertical, flaring gently at the base for stability. The upper section features an internal opaline glass diffuser, cradled by three brass arms, which casts a diffused, glare-free illumination. A warm-toned, lightly textured original fabric shade in beige completes the composition. The shade sits just above the light source and is topped by a brass cap that conceals the mounting hardware.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a prolific Swedish lighting designer and manufacturer, renowned for his innovative use of materials to modulate light and atmosphere. Originally trained as a cabinetmaker and later as an architect, Jakobsson brought an architectonic clarity to his designs while softening their effect through the use of layered shades, glass, and wood veneer. His company, established in the early 1950s in the small town of Markaryd, produced a wide range of residential and public lighting, becoming internationally recognized during the mid-century era.

The G-198 model exemplifies Jakobsson’s refined balance of architectural form and poetic illumination. The materials—solid brass, mouth-blown opaline glass, and woven textile—are emblematic of Swedish lighting design of the 1950s, offering both visual tactility and practical durability.
