Hans Bergström table lamp
This is a rare table lamp designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is constructed from a combination of brass, opaline glass, and beechwood, demonstrating the refined material sensibility and balanced composition characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design.
The lamp’s form is composed of a broad, flared brass base with a circular footprint, supporting a tapered column made of vertically grooved beechwood. This fluted wooden stem rises to a conical brass shade with a toothed crown at the top and a serrated lower edge, providing a textural and graphic contrast. The underside of the shade is painted white to maximize light reflection. The central light source is housed in an opaline glass diffuser, softly illuminating the area below while concealing the bulb.
Hans Bergström, a prominent Swedish designer, co-founded the lighting manufacturer Ateljé Lyktan and was instrumental in shaping postwar Swedish lighting aesthetics. Though this model was produced by ASEA—another influential Swedish lighting company—it exhibits the hallmarks of Bergström’s design language: sculptural restraint, technical elegance, and a strong sense of proportion. ASEA, known primarily for industrial and domestic electrical goods, collaborated with top designers in the 1940s and 50s to produce a series of distinguished lighting objects.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with light surface wear and patina consistent with age. The materials—brass, wood, and glass—have aged gracefully, with minor signs of use but no structural issues.
The overall dimensions are 38 cm in diameter (14.9 inches) and 53 cm in height (20.9 inches).
