Art Deco table lamp

This Art Deco table lamp, produced by SVM Handarbete in Sweden during the 1930s, features a sculptural design that combines geometric order and symbolic figuration. The base is composed of three stylized eagle figures with outstretched wings, forming a dynamic support structure for a spherical, tiered central body. The lamp’s central body is crafted from patinated bronze with a variegated green surface, interspersed with circular bands of polished brass. This stepped architectural form is reminiscent of early modernist industrial design, where the contrast between the oxidized bronze and the gleaming brass highlights the material richness and depth of color in deep green, dark bronze, and golden brass.

The vertical socket mount and harp are made of brass with a warm patina, supporting a shade (which is not included). The socket has been modernized to allow for contemporary use but retains compatibility with the original structure. The design of the lamp reflects the Art Deco movement’s hallmark characteristics, such as geometric precision, streamlined form, and symbolic motifs. The eagle figures likely symbolize themes of strength, power, and ascension, which were prevalent in the interwar period and often used in Art Deco designs to evoke a sense of grandeur and progress.

SVM Handarbete, a lesser-known Swedish manufacturer, was recognized for its artisanal metalwork, combining artistic casting with functional home decor. Although the designer of this piece remains unknown, the craftsmanship and design elements position it clearly within the Scandinavian interpretation of the Art Deco style. This style blended classical references with the emerging modernist aesthetics of the time, resulting in highly stylized and functional objects for the home.

The lamp measures 47 cm in height and 18 cm in diameter (18.5 x 7.1 inches). It remains in very good vintage condition, with light patina that is consistent with age. The cast bronze eagle figures are well defined and intact, and the surface of the lamp shows no structural damage. Please note that the lamp is sold without a shade.
