Poul Henningsen table lamp
The lamp features a broad, gently curved metal shade finished in a muted green lacquer, creating an elegant horizontal silhouette. Beneath the large upper shade sits a smaller, tiered arrangement of white opaline glass shades, carefully positioned around the central light source. This combination of metal and glass demonstrates Henningsen’s innovative exploration of reflected and diffused illumination, designed to provide comfortable, glare-free light.
The upper shade has a shallow, domed profile with a subtly curved edge and a light-coloured interior that reflects illumination downward. The opaline glass elements beneath it have softly rounded forms and smooth surfaces, creating a refined contrast with the broad metal shade. Together, these components form a carefully considered lighting system in which each element contributes to controlling the direction and quality of the light.
The shade assembly is supported by a slender brass stem with a series of finely detailed cylindrical fittings and decorative rings. The stem rises from a circular brass base with a substantial central mounting, providing a stable foundation while maintaining the lamp’s elegant proportions. The brass has developed a rich, natural patina, with subtle variations in tone that emphasize the age and authenticity of the piece.
A small circular brass fitting with a decorative finial secures the upper shade, while a discreet switch is integrated into the lower section of the stem. The combination of precisely machined brass details, understated geometry, and contrasting materials reflects the exceptional craftsmanship associated with early Louis Poulsen production.
When illuminated, the opaline glass shades produce a warm, soft glow beneath the larger metal shade. The layered construction conceals the direct light source and distributes illumination downward and outward, creating an intimate and atmospheric lighting effect. The green upper shade remains visually restrained, allowing the illuminated glass elements to become the focal point of the composition.
Poul Henningsen was among the most influential figures in Danish lighting design, renowned for his scientific and artistic investigation of light, reflection, and glare. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the 1920s and resulted in a series of innovative lighting designs that would become defining examples of Scandinavian modernism. This early table lamp illustrates the experimental character of that formative period, combining functional lighting principles with a sophisticated architectural expression.
The lamp bears the marking PAT. APPL., referring to a patent application, an interesting detail associated with its early production.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with small signs of age and use consistent with its period. The green lacquered shade shows minor surface marks and wear, while the brass displays natural patination and subtle discolouration. The opaline glass elements appear well preserved, contributing to the overall original character of this rare early example.
