Hans Bergström table lamps
This rare pair of table lamps was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. Each lamp features a tapered stem made of beech wood with vertical fluting, adding texture and rhythm to the overall vertical profile. The bases are crafted from patinated brass, displaying a warm, aged surface and a subtly concave shape that gently elevates the form from the tabletop. The shades are constructed from white fabric in a slightly conical, drum-like shape, designed to diffuse light evenly and softly.
Hans Bergström, an influential Swedish lighting designer and co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan, is recognized for his sophisticated interplay of materials and form that helped define mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Although these particular lamps were produced by ASEA rather than Ateljé Lyktan, Bergström’s distinctive design language is apparent in the lamps’ clean silhouettes and harmonious balance of elements.
ASEA, originally an electrical company, was also a prominent Swedish manufacturer of high-quality lighting during the mid-20th century. The company collaborated with leading designers to produce modernist lighting pieces characterized by technical innovation and the minimalist lines typical of Scandinavian design in that period.
These lamps embody Scandinavian modernism through their clarity of materials and functional elegance. They are in very good condition, showing minor wear consistent with age and use. The brass bases exhibit a surface patina with scattered marks, while the wooden stems remain well preserved with slight natural aging. The original push-button switches are integrated into the bases.
The dimensions measure 34.5 cm in diameter and 55 cm in height (approximately 13.6 inches wide by 21.7 inches tall).
