Svend Aage Holm Sørensen floor lamp

This very rare floor lamp was designed by Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced by Holm Sørensen & Co. in Denmark during the 1950s. The lamp is an exemplary piece of Danish modern lighting design, combining sculptural aesthetics with functional innovation.

The floor lamp features a dynamic construction composed of black lacquered metal rods forming the main structural elements, paired with polished brass accents. A prominent element is the brass reflector shade, elegantly shaped like an elongated cup, suspended on a slender black metal rod. Above it, an elliptical white-lacquered metal disc serves as a diffuser, redirecting the light and softening its spread in the surrounding environment.

The color scheme consists of deep matte black for the structural frame, a warm golden hue for the brass elements, and an off-white tone for the disc-shaped diffuser. The interplay of these materials and finishes emphasizes the contrasts between matte and reflective surfaces, a hallmark of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design.

The shape is defined by slender, elongated forms, subtle curves, and delicate lines that intersect with visual lightness. The design is both linear and organic, creating a dynamic vertical composition that gives the lamp a sculptural presence even when not illuminated.

The lamp remains in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and gentle patina on the brass components, consistent with careful use. The original lacquer is largely preserved, displaying only minimal wear that enhances the authenticity of the piece.

Svend Aage Holm Sørensen (1913–2004) was a prominent Danish designer renowned for his expressive approach to lighting design. He often experimented with unconventional forms and techniques, favoring sculptural and dramatic expressions of light. Holm Sørensen’s works are considered highly collectible, representing an important chapter of Danish mid-century lighting history.

Holm Sørensen & Co. was the manufacturer behind many of Holm Sørensen’s innovative lighting designs, contributing significantly to the modernist movement in Denmark. The company was known for producing high-quality, artistically ambitious lighting pieces throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
