Floor lamps
This rare pair of height-adjustable floor lamps, produced in Denmark during the 1950s, is attributed to an unknown designer but stands as a distinguished example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting. The lamps are defined by their elegant combination of natural materials and mechanical adjustability, embodying the Scandinavian tradition of merging functionality with refined craftsmanship.
The vertical shafts of the lamps are clad in saddle-stitched cognac-toned leather, which has developed an attractive natural patina and wear over time, consistent with the age of the pieces. This leather wrapping provides a tactile, warm contrast to the cooler brass elements, suggesting a bespoke construction. The shafts are mounted on circular bases, which incorporate both brass and a leather or leather-like top finish that complements the leather-wrapped stems. The bases show subtle oxidation and surface marks, adding character and authenticity to the lamps.
Each lamp is equipped with a horizontally extending brass arm, allowing for lateral adjustment of the light source. The height of the arm can be adjusted along the vertical shaft via a tightening mechanism in brass. At the top of each lamp, the brass loop finials add a finishing touch of geometric elegance. The original pleated fabric lampshades are in a warm beige tone with a gently flared conical shape. When illuminated, these shades produce a soft, diffused golden glow, characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. There is visible wear and minor damage to the fabric shades, consistent with their age and use.
The adjustable nature of these lamps makes them versatile for both reading and ambient lighting. Their sculptural presence, coupled with the honest use of materials, aligns with the broader principles of Scandinavian modernism: simplicity, function, and craftsmanship.
The lamps range in height from 123 cm to 179 cm (approximately 48.4 to 70.5 inches), with a width of 40 cm and a depth of 65 cm (about 15.7 x 25.6 inches). Both lamps remain in good vintage condition, with functioning mechanics and electrical components. The patina and wear on the brass and leather surfaces, as well as the minor damages to the shades, reflect their age and authentic vintage character. This pair offers a rare and refined lighting solution for interiors that appreciate Scandinavian design heritage and material richness.
