Poul Henningsen table lamp
This rare table lamp is an early example of the PH 3½/2 model designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark between 1927 and 1928. It is a highly collectible piece from the early development phase of Henningsen’s pioneering three-shade lighting system, which was engineered to provide glare-free illumination and balanced light distribution.
The lamp features a three-tiered shade assembly in original spun copper, with a softly oxidized surface that enhances the warmth of the material and contributes to a rich, natural patina. The shades are precisely proportioned to reflect and diffuse light downward and laterally without direct glare, an innovation that made Henningsen’s lighting system both technically advanced and visually elegant. The main stem and base are executed in browned brass, exhibiting a warm tonality and tactile surface aging. The underside of the top reflector is marked “PAT. APPL.”, consistent with early production documentation prior to patent approval.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish designer, architect, and cultural critic renowned for his revolutionary approach to lighting design. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen led to a series of lamps that remain foundational to modern lighting. The PH system, introduced in the mid-1920s, was based on logarithmic spirals and was informed by scientific principles of light behavior and visual ergonomics. Henningsen’s legacy continues through enduring production and international appreciation of his work.
Louis Poulsen, established in 1874, became a central figure in Danish modern design through its enduring partnerships with key designers. During the interwar period and into the mid-century, the company developed lighting characterized by simplicity, craftsmanship, and technical precision, qualities that are embodied in this early PH 3½/2 table lamp.
The lamp is preserved in good vintage condition, with surface wear and oxidation consistent with its age. The copper and brass surfaces display attractive patination, contributing to the lamp’s authenticity and historical character.
The dimensions of the lamp are 34 cm in diameter and 44 cm in height (approximately 13.4 x 17.3 inches).
