Hans Bergström ceiling lamp

Information

This rare ceiling lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting, combining elegant proportions with delicate detailing. Crafted from brass and opaline glass, the lamp reflects Bergström’s signature approach—balancing functional light diffusion with sculptural form and subtle ornamentation.

The central feature of the lamp is its softly rounded, slightly flattened opaline glass shade. The milky white surface gently diffuses the light, offering a warm, even glow that contributes to a calm and inviting atmosphere. The glass is smooth and uniform, allowing the light source to disappear into the form, which is typical of Bergström’s preference for ambient rather than direct illumination.

The glass is framed and supported by a brass structure that adds both contrast and visual richness. The cylindrical brass stem extends vertically and terminates in a flared cone at the top, creating a formal progression from narrow to wide that echoes classical architectural detailing. Along the lower brass rim that encircles the shade are delicately executed cross-shaped perforations—both decorative and functional, as they allow traces of light to escape, creating subtle patterns and enhancing the lamp’s ambient quality.

The brass, with its warm golden tone, displays a light patina that emphasizes its vintage character without compromising its surface integrity. The overall condition is excellent, with no cracks, chips, or distortions in the glass, and the brass retaining its structural and aesthetic clarity.

With a diameter of 23 cm and a total height of 55 cm (approximately 9 × 21.7 inches), the lamp is well-suited for use in living rooms, entryways, or dining spaces—areas where both soft light and elegant visual presence are desired. The vertical drop provides a slender and graceful profile, making the piece ideal for ceiling mounting without overwhelming the space.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a pioneer in Swedish lighting design and co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan. His work often bridged early modernist ideals with a poetic sensibility, using materials such as brass, fabric, and glass to explore how lighting could shape interior mood and architectural rhythm. This lamp demonstrates his later move toward more modernist forms, with minimal yet thoughtful decoration, technical precision, and a focus on light quality.

Ateljé Lyktan, founded in 1934, became one of Sweden’s foremost lighting manufacturers under Bergström’s direction. Their production in the 1940s–60s was marked by innovation in material use and collaboration with architects, helping define the visual language of Scandinavian interiors in the postwar period.

This ceiling lamp is a fine and well-preserved example of Bergström’s sophisticated lighting design, offering timeless appeal, material richness, and atmospheric performance. It is both a practical lighting solution and a collector-worthy artifact of Swedish design history.
