Information

This ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp features a geometric and organic form characteristic of Swedish modernism, combining warm materials with innovative construction techniques. The frame is constructed from teak wood, creating a sculptural three-armed structure that extends horizontally from a central brass hub. Each arm supports two light sources in each end covered by a shade crafted from sprayed plastic resin over a metal wire frame, a technique pioneered during the mid-century era to create lightweight yet visually textured lighting elements.

The shades are soft ochre in tone with a fine ribbed pattern formed by the underlying metal wires, which give the shades a distinctively organic appearance. When illuminated, the resin shades produce a warm, diffuse light that emphasizes the structured yet natural aesthetic of the piece. The shades are supported by brass fittings, and the lamp is suspended from the ceiling by multiple cords that gather into a brass ceiling cup, enhancing both stability and visual coherence.

Hans Bergström, an influential figure in Swedish lighting design, founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934. He was known for his innovative work with new materials and techniques, and his designs often balanced functionalism with organic and sculptural qualities. Ateljé Lyktan quickly became a major producer of Swedish lighting and collaborated with several leading designers of the mid-century period.

The condition of the lamp is consistent with its age, with minor wear visible on the brass and teak surfaces, while the shades retain their original form and function. There is a natural patina to the brass and a warm tonality to the teak that has developed over time, adding to the authentic character of the piece.

The diameter is 105 cm (41.3 inches) and the overall height is 48 cm (18.9 inches).
