Hans Bergström ceiling lamp

Information

This rare ceiling lamp / flush mount was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden. The lamp is from the mid-20th century and is constructed in brass with five opaline glass diffusers. The design reflects the restrained elegance and geometric clarity typical of Scandinavian modernist lighting.

The fixture is configured with a central conical brass hub from which five equidistant radial arms extend. These arms terminate in tapered brass sleeves that hold opaline glass shades. The shades are softly flared and bulbous, rendered in thick, white opaline glass that provides an even, warm diffusion of light when illuminated. The lamp mounts directly to the ceiling, with the brass body flush against the surface, making it ideal for lower ceiling heights.

The materials are of high quality. The brass has developed a natural patina, contributing visual depth and a warm tonal character. The opaline glass is free from cracks or discoloration, maintaining its original semi-translucent finish. The lamp is in excellent condition, with all structural and visual elements intact.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a Swedish architect and designer best known for co-founding Ateljé Lyktan, though he also designed for other notable Swedish lighting manufacturers such as ASEA. His work often bridges architectural utility with decorative subtlety, and this piece exemplifies his ability to balance structural function with refined detailing.

ASEA, originally an industrial electrical manufacturer, also produced lighting during the mid-20th century in collaboration with some of Sweden’s leading designers. Their lighting designs from this period are known for technical precision, clean forms, and enduring material quality.
