Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp is an early and rare example of the PH-4/3 model designed by Danish architect and lighting theorist Poul Henningsen. It was produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark between 1926 and 1928 and features the iconic multi-shade system that characterizes Henningsen’s groundbreaking approach to glare-free, evenly distributed light. The lamp is composed of three nested metal shades arranged in a logarithmic configuration that reflects and diffuses light, a technique Henningsen developed based on scientific light distribution principles.
The lamp’s exterior is finished in its original red lacquer over bronzed copper, now aged to a rich and variegated patina that testifies to its near-century-old provenance. The stamped “PAT. APPL.” marking on the internal support ring confirms its early production, likely among the initial series manufactured following Henningsen’s 1926 design patent application. The design’s uppermost, widest shade reflects light downward, while the lower tiered elements soften and redirect the illumination laterally, reducing harsh contrast and glare.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a seminal figure in Danish modernism, known for his philosophical and technical writings on lighting as much as for his designs. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the 1920s and revolutionized the lighting industry with scientifically based, human-centered design. The PH system, introduced with the 1925 Paris exhibition, exemplifies his commitment to comfortable, functional lighting rooted in an understanding of human vision.
This lamp is in authentic vintage condition, with visible surface wear, patination, and small areas of paint loss consistent with age and use. These elements contribute to its historical character and are typical of unrestored examples from the interwar period. Structurally sound and complete, the lamp includes its original brass fixture and twisted cord.
The PH-4/3 ceiling lamp represents an early and important moment in Scandinavian design history, marking a transition from decorative to functional modernist aesthetics. It measures 40 cm in diameter and approximately 130 cm in total hanging height (15.7 x 51.2 inches).
