Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This very rare and early ceiling lamp, model 1447, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1930s. The lamp is an exceptional example of Tynell’s lighting designs, blending Art Deco influences with Scandinavian modern craftsmanship. The design features a symmetrical six-arm structure extending from a central column, with the arms connected to a beautifully fluted vertical stem. This attention to detail showcases the refined artistry that defines Tynell’s work.
The lamp is fitted with thin glass shades, each shaped in an outward-flaring, tapered form. The opaline glass softly diffuses light, creating a warm, ambient glow while maintaining a sculptural presence that enhances the lamp’s overall aesthetic. The brass elements of the lamp include decorative features such as a ribbed texture on the stem and subtle geometric detailing at the ends of each arm, reinforcing the Art Deco influence and adding visual interest.
Paavo Tynell, a pioneering Finnish lighting designer, was known for his ability to combine functionality with artistic elegance. As a co-founder of Taito Oy, Tynell played a key role in shaping Finnish lighting design during the early 20th century. His work often integrated intricate metalwork and delicate glass elements, achieving a harmonious balance between craftsmanship and innovation. This lamp is a testament to Tynell’s expertise and vision.
The lamp remains in its original condition, with a natural patina on the brass surfaces, consistent with its age and adding to its vintage charm. The dimensions of the lamp are 70 cm (27.6 inches) in diameter and 65 cm (25.6 inches) in height, making it a striking and elegant fixture that captures both the functional and decorative aspects of mid-century Scandinavian design.
