Ceiling lamp

Information

This rare ceiling lamp, produced in Sweden by an unknown designer, is a refined example of mid-20th-century Scandinavian lighting design that merges minimalist structure with carefully balanced material contrasts. It demonstrates a functional clarity and geometric precision often associated with the period’s architectural lighting, while incorporating subtle decorative elements that enhance its visual presence.

The lamp features a linear, rectangular frame made from warm-toned copper. The metal has aged naturally, with a soft patina and light speckling that lend character and underscore the authenticity of the piece. The copper’s reddish-golden hue brings a sense of richness and warmth to the otherwise restrained composition, while maintaining the industrial elegance typical of post-war Scandinavian fixtures.

Suspended from the ceiling by two copper chains, the frame supports four cylindrical white opaline glass shades. These shades are evenly spaced along the horizontal axis, each enclosed at either end with clean, rounded edges. The opaline glass diffuses light gently and evenly, providing a warm ambient glow ideal for both domestic and public settings. The shades are secured by black angular metal brackets that project from the copper frame. These brackets add a graphic, architectural element, visually grounding the lighter glass and contrasting with the warm tones of the copper.

The interplay between the smooth curvature of the glass, the linearity of the copper frame, and the angular black supports reflects a deliberate and balanced aesthetic sensibility. The combination of materials—copper, opaline glass, and blackened steel—speaks to a modernist approach grounded in both material honesty and formal harmony.

Condition is good vintage. The copper surface shows a minor patina and light surface marks consistent with age, while the glass cylinders remain intact and free of visible cracks or discoloration. The piece retains its structural integrity and original visual impact, making it suitable for restoration or immediate use.

The dimensions are 105 cm in length, 35.5 cm in width, and 60 cm in height (41.3 x 14 x 23.6 inches), making the lamp well-scaled for dining areas, kitchen islands, workspaces, or interiors requiring a strong horizontal lighting element. Though unsigned, this piece demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship and a design ethos in keeping with the principles of Scandinavian modernism—blending functional simplicity with elegant material expression.
