Lars Holmström candlestick

This rare seven-arm candlestick was designed and produced by Lars Holmström in his own workshop, Firma Lars Holmström, located in Arvika, Sweden, during the 1940s. It is executed in solid brass with a rich, natural patina that has developed over time, emphasizing both its age and craftsmanship. The surface retains subtle oxidation and green undertones within the candle holders, characteristic of aged brass, while the main structure has been well preserved with only minor wear consistent with age.

The construction features a geometric horizontal composition, combining stepped and linear brass sections that create a rhythm of vertical and angular forms. The upper structure rests on a spherical central support, which in turn is mounted on a circular stepped base. The balance between the geometric and curved elements exemplifies Holmström’s sense of proportion and his sculptural approach to functional objects. The piece reflects the intersection of Art Deco and early modernist design influences that were present in Swedish metalwork during the mid-20th century.

Lars Holmström (1888–1959) was a Swedish designer and metal craftsman who established his workshop in Arvika in 1920. He became known for his distinctive approach to brass and ironwork, producing lighting fixtures, candlesticks, and decorative metal objects of high quality. His work often combined precision and craftsmanship with bold architectural forms, aligning with the Scandinavian movement toward refined functionalism in the interwar and postwar years.

This example remains in good vintage condition with small traces of use and a well-preserved surface finish. It represents an important expression of Swedish decorative arts from the period, combining artisanal metalwork with sculptural modernist design.
