Nils Fougstedt & Anna Petrus jar
This very rare jar was designed by Nils Fougstedt and Anna Petrus and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in 1928. The jar features a cylindrical body crafted in pewter and brass, adorned with a geometric relief pattern of repeating chevrons. This motif is emblematic of the Swedish Grace movement, which fused classical influences with Art Deco stylization. The jar is crowned by a sculptural lid topped with a finely detailed cast lion, a signature decorative element frequently employed by Anna Petrus, inspired by her interest in North African and classical art.
Nils Fougstedt (1881–1954) was a prominent Swedish metal artist and designer known for his expertise in pewter and silver. He was instrumental in developing Svenskt Tenn’s early metalwork, contributing to the company’s reputation for superior craftsmanship. Anna Petrus (1886–1949), a sculptor and designer, collaborated closely with Svenskt Tenn during the Swedish Grace era. Her stylized lion motifs became iconic, blending artistic expression with functional design.
Svenskt Tenn, established in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, quickly became a leading force in Swedish decorative arts. The company produced refined and innovative works in pewter, silver, textiles, and furniture. This jar exemplifies the peak of Svenskt Tenn’s early metalwork, combining precise craftsmanship with artistic detail characteristic of the period.
The jar is preserved in excellent condition, displaying a naturally aged patina on the pewter surface that enhances its character. The base is stamped with the Svenskt Tenn maker’s mark, confirming its authenticity. The dimensions measure 14 cm in width, 12 cm in depth, and 20 cm in height (5.5 by 4.7 by 7.9 inches).
