Just Andersen vase
This bronze vase, designed by Just Andersen and produced by GAB in Sweden during the 1940s, exemplifies Scandinavian metalwork of the early 20th century. The form draws inspiration from classical amphora shapes, featuring a gently tapering ovoid body that transitions into a slightly flared cylindrical neck. Subtle horizontal incised lines near the vase’s upper section add a refined decorative element without detracting from its overall minimalist aesthetic. The piece is further defined by two elongated, curved handles with stylized scroll motifs, which integrate smoothly into the silhouette. Over time, the bronze has developed a dark patina, lending depth and a sense of historical character to the surface.
Just Andersen (1884–1943) was a Danish designer and sculptor noted for his innovative work in metal, including bronze, pewter, and his proprietary alloy known as “Disko metal.” His designs meld classical influences with the streamlined, functional qualities of early modernism, resulting in works prized for their sculptural presence and elegant restraint. Although much of Andersen’s production took place in Denmark, he collaborated with Swedish manufacturers like GAB (Guldsmedsaktiebolaget), a prominent producer of fine metalwork.
GAB, established in the late 19th century, was a leading Swedish company specializing in decorative and functional objects in bronze and silver. Their collaborations with prominent Scandinavian designers during the mid-20th century helped position the company as a key player in the region’s metalworking tradition.
This vase reflects Andersen’s distinctive style, balancing sculptural form with minimalist detailing. The dark patinated surface emphasizes the smooth contours and subtle incisions, enhancing the piece’s understated elegance. It remains in good vintage condition, retaining its patina with minor signs of age consistent with its history. The underside is stamped with the GAB maker’s mark and model number, confirming its authenticity. The vase measures 17 cm in width, 15.5 cm in depth, and 25 cm in height (6.7 by 6.1 by 9.8 inches).
