Hans-Agne Jakobsson candlestick
This candlestick, model L-67, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his eponymous company in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s. The candlestick is constructed from polished brass and features a unique composition with three elevated holders arranged in a cross-like configuration around a central stem. Each holder is topped with a bulbous amber-tinted glass cylinder, blending geometric regularity with sculptural elegance. The design reflects Jakobsson’s attention to both material and atmospheric qualities.
Each brass holder is fitted with a cylindrical cup, which is adorned with a distinctive perforated pattern of triangular cut-outs around the lower rim. These perforations serve both as a decorative feature and as a functional heat ventilation element. The transparent amber glass shades are softly rounded and slightly flared at the base. They sit over the brass holders, gently diffusing candlelight to create a warm and reflective glow that enhances the atmosphere of the room.
The candlestick is supported by a flat, circular brass base and a central stem, which supports the four radially mounted holders on short arms. The design achieves a harmonious balance between industrial precision and domestic softness, with the brass providing structural clarity and the glass adding a tonal warmth that elevates the overall effect.
The candlestick measures 21 cm in diameter and 22.5 cm in height (approximately 8.27 x 8.86 inches). It is in good vintage condition, showing only minor signs of wear, such as small surface scratches and slight patina to the brass, in keeping with its age.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a Swedish designer, best known for his innovative work in lighting and metalwork. His designs were informed by a deep understanding of light diffusion, organic silhouettes, and the interaction of materials. Jakobsson’s work, particularly in lighting, is celebrated for its sculptural form and atmospheric qualities, and his designs have left a lasting mark on Swedish design.
Jakobsson founded his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd in 1951, where he produced both lighting and decorative objects in wood, brass, and glass. His firm became a prominent figure in Scandinavian mid-century design, and this candlestick is a prime example of his aesthetic: modular, precise, and luminous, bridging the worlds of craft and design in postwar Scandinavia.
