Information

This rare large ceramic vase was designed by Berndt Friberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1960s. Executed in stoneware with Friberg’s signature hare’s fur glaze, the vase exemplifies his masterful control of form and surface. The elongated ovoid body tapers elegantly into a narrow neck with a slightly flared rim, achieving perfect balance and proportion—a hallmark of Friberg’s refined aesthetic.

The glaze presents subtle tonal variations of brown and grey with a delicate vertical striation, the characteristic “hare’s fur” effect resulting from the controlled flow of iron oxides during firing. This layered glaze surface gives the piece a soft, tactile depth and a subtle sheen that shifts under light. Each vase by Friberg was individually wheel-thrown and glazed, making every example unique in tone and texture.

The condition is good vintage, showing only minimal signs of age and use. The base bears the Gustavsberg studio mark along with Friberg’s impressed monogram, confirming its authenticity.

Berndt Friberg (1899–1981) was one of Sweden’s most celebrated studio potters, renowned for his technical precision and sensitivity to form. Working for Gustavsberg from 1934 onward, he developed a distinctive modernist language rooted in craftsmanship and subtlety, influencing generations of Scandinavian ceramic artists.
