Stig Lindberg vase
This tall ceramic vase was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden around 1960. The vase is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian studio pottery, combining an elongated cylindrical body with a narrow, gently flared neck. Its proportions and surface rhythm reflect Lindberg’s ability to merge tactile form with subtle ornamentation.
The surface is finished in a rich, brown glaze with a variegated pattern of incised vertical impressions, creating a textured relief across the cylindrical body. The darker accents within the grooves contrast with the warmer brown glaze, giving the piece depth and a sense of movement. The glaze transitions toward the neck, darkening into an almost smoky tone before tapering into the exposed rim.
Stig Lindberg was one of Sweden’s most influential designers of the 20th century. He worked across multiple disciplines—ceramics, illustration, glass, and industrial design—but is particularly renowned for his ceramics at Gustavsberg, where he was both an artistic director and key innovator. His work from the 1950s and 1960s often explored experimental glazes and sculptural shapes, moving between whimsical and austere expressions.
This vase remains in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of wear and patina consistent with age and handling. The base features the Gustavsberg stamp, along with a label from a previous collector, adding to the documented provenance of the piece.
