Information

This is a rare pair of side tables or bureaus designed by Swedish designers Alf Svensson and Yngvar Sandström, produced by Fröseke AB in Sweden during the 1960s. The design belongs to the Scandinavian modern tradition but distinguishes itself through a refined material palette and a geometric, architectural composition.

Each piece consists of a rectangular case in rosewood veneer, featuring a flat, flush top surface and two symmetrical drawers with circular brass pulls. The rosewood presents a rich reddish-brown tone with prominent grain patterns, including swirling figures and linear striations that emphasize the expressive potential of the wood. The deep, natural sheen of the wood contrasts with the polished brass detailing, which includes both the drawer handles and the leg structures.

The legs are composed of slender brass profiles, square in section, running continuously from the floor to the lower edge of the case. A horizontal brass apron reinforces the structure and visually balances the heavier wooden volume above. The contrast between the warm brass and dark rosewood creates a visual dialogue typical of high-end mid-century Scandinavian furnishings, where material clarity and precision craftsmanship were paramount.

Alf Svensson (1929–1992) was a key figure in Swedish modern design, known for his functional yet graceful furniture. He often collaborated with other designers, including Yngvar Sandström, who also worked on interior and furniture design during the postwar period. Their joint projects often focused on blending structural lightness with tactile warmth, evident in the use of contrasting materials and simplified forms. Fröseke AB, the producer, was a Swedish furniture manufacturer particularly active during the mid-century era and known for quality cabinetmaking and a focus on contemporary aesthetics.

These tables are versatile in use and proportioned for use as sideboards, nightstands, or low bureaus. Their minimal but luxurious form typifies mid-century modern ideals: clean lines, honest materials, and restrained ornamentation.

Condition is good vintage with small signs of use. The pieces have undergone restoration, with careful attention to preserving the integrity of the original finish while refreshing the overall appearance. Brass elements show some light patination consistent with age.
