Anders Pehrson candlestick
The Ofir Octav is a rare sixteen-light floor candlestick designed by Anders Pehrson in 1967 and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. The design is executed in lacquered black metal with solid brass candle holders and sixteen hand-blown clear glass hurricane shades. The composition is built around a slender central stem rising from a circular weighted base, supporting four symmetrically arranged tiers of cantilevered arms. Each arm terminates in a cylindrical brass candle cup fitted with a removable clear glass shade of softly rounded, tulip-like form, creating a balanced architectural silhouette that combines geometric precision with organic glass contours.
The contrast between the matte black lacquered steel structure, the warm golden brass fittings and the transparent glass shades is characteristic of Scandinavian lighting and decorative objects from the late 1960s. The modular arrangement allows light to be distributed evenly across all sixteen candles while maintaining an open and visually lightweight appearance. The combination of industrial metalwork with refined glass craftsmanship reflects the period’s emphasis on functional construction paired with elegant material contrasts.
Anders Pehrson (1912–1982) was one of Sweden’s most influential industrial designers and is closely associated with post-war Scandinavian lighting design. After a successful career in the metal industry, he became managing director and chief designer at Ateljé Lyktan, where he introduced a series of technically innovative and visually distinctive lighting and interior objects. Pehrson’s work is recognised for its clean lines, carefully engineered construction and functional approach, while maintaining a strong sculptural quality that has become emblematic of Swedish modernism.
Ateljé Lyktan was founded in 1934 in Åhus, southern Sweden, and developed into one of the country’s leading lighting manufacturers during the twentieth century. Under Anders Pehrson’s direction, the company gained international recognition for producing high-quality lighting and decorative objects that combined advanced production techniques with Scandinavian design principles. Original pieces from this period are highly regarded for their craftsmanship, durability and enduring aesthetic.
Designed in 1967, the Ofir Octav belongs to the Scandinavian Modern movement while anticipating elements of the Space Age aesthetic through its rhythmic, multi-level composition and graphic use of repeated forms. Rather than relying on ornamentation, the design achieves its visual impact through proportion, symmetry and the interplay between transparent glass, reflective brass and dark lacquered metal. The sixteen-light configuration makes the piece both a functional candlestick and a sculptural centrepiece suitable for larger interior spaces.
The candlestick is in good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The lacquered metal frame displays light wear, while the brass components exhibit a natural patina and minor surface marks. The clear glass hurricane shades remain in good condition and contribute to the overall integrity and presentation of the design.
