Anders Pehrson candlesticks
The Origo candlestick, designed by Anders Pehrson in 1967 and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, is a refined expression of Scandinavian modernist design applied to a traditional typology. The piece is composed of two primary materials—polished brass and clear blown glass—configured in a manner that highlights both material contrast and formal simplicity.
The design features a vertically oriented cylindrical brass stem, mounted on a broad, flared circular base. This proportionally weighted base provides visual and structural balance, while the stem rises cleanly to support the candleholder. Above, a wide glass chimney with softly flared sides sits atop the brass form, providing both functional protection from drafts and a formal reference to historical lighting, particularly oil lamps and ecclesiastical candleholders.
The material combination is characteristic of Swedish mid-century design, where the warmth of polished brass is offset by the visual lightness of glass. The use of cylindrical and flared geometries reflects Pehrson’s interest in repetition, modularity, and clarity of form—hallmarks of his design language during his tenure as artistic director at Ateljé Lyktan. The glass component not only frames the candle but also acts as a diffuser, enhancing the play of light and shadow across the brass surfaces.
Anders Pehrson (1912–1982) was instrumental in evolving Ateljé Lyktan’s aesthetic from artisanal modernism to one more aligned with systematized production and formal minimalism. While best known for his lighting designs, Pehrson’s approach often extended into decorative objects such as the Origo candlestick, which maintains his emphasis on utility and restrained elegance.
The Origo model belongs to a broader series of modular lighting and tabletop objects developed by Pehrson during the late 1960s. While more compact and self-contained than his larger candelabra or floor pieces, it shares the same architectural clarity and sculptural intent, demonstrating how Pehrson adapted his design philosophy across scales.
The candlestick measures 14 cm in diameter and 29 cm in height (approximately 5.5 x 11.4 inches). It remains in good vintage condition, with a warm patina and surface wear to the brass consistent with age and use. The clear blown glass chimney is intact and unclouded. This object stands as a carefully proportioned and materially rich example of Swedish decorative arts at the intersection of tradition and modernism.
