Armchairs
This suite of ten armchairs dates to the 1960s and was produced in Denmark by an unidentified workshop. Each chair presents a rectilinear silhouette defined by a solid oak frame finished in a light honey tone. The oak exhibits a straight, even grain that reinforces the chairs’ architectural profile, while the squared arm panels extend seamlessly from the legs to support a single-piece upholstered side and arm surface.
The upholstery is original red leather, whose vibrant hue has mellowed over six decades to a richer, brick-red patina. On many of the seats and backrests, the leather shows areas of wear and soft creasing where the grain has loosened, and a few chairs bear faint stains borne of careful everyday use. These age-related marks attest to the chairs’ authenticity and service in a communal setting, without undermining their formal clarity or structural integrity.
In profile, the chairs are defined by their supportive proportions: a deep seat measuring 55 cm front to back and a high backrest rising to 83.5 cm above the floor. The seat height of 45 cm provides a comfortable, upright posture suited to both dining and meeting contexts. The squared armrests, integrated into the side panels, offer a continuous visual line and practical support, their broad tops echoing the horizontal emphasis found in many Scandinavian designs of the post-war era.
Although the designer remains unknown, these armchairs embody the hallmarks of mid-century Danish modernism: honest materials, simple geometric forms, and an unwavering focus on functionality. During this period, numerous small Danish cabinetmakers drew on a shared vocabulary of oak, leather and precise joinery, producing robust furnishings for private homes, public institutions and corporate environments alike. The clarity of these chairs’ construction—visible tenons at key joints and tight mitred corners—reflects that tradition of craftsmanship.
Measuring 61 cm in width, 55 cm in depth and 83.5 cm in height (approximately 24 by 21.7 by 32.9 inches) with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches), this set of ten armchairs offers a cohesive ensemble. Their enduring design, natural materiality and traces of lived experience make them noteworthy examples of Danish post-war furniture, suited to spaces that value both historical character and timeless functionality.
