Sune Lindström chairs

This exceptionally rare set of eight folding armchairs was designed by Swedish architect and designer Sune Lindström and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden. The chairs combine luxurious materials and refined engineering in a functional and elegantly modern format, drawing on both Scandinavian craft tradition and international modernist influences of the mid-20th century.

Each chair is constructed from richly grained solid rosewood, displaying a warm, reddish-brown hue with dark linear figuring. The armrests, structural members, and cross rails are all formed in rounded and tapered profiles, with a precision and consistency that reflect the high standards of production associated with NK’s workshop. The folding mechanism is supported by diagonally braced members and brass hardware, which includes both hinge joints and distinctive collar fittings. These cast brass rings offer mechanical strength while contributing a decorative accent.

The seat and backrest are made of thick, saddle-stitched black leather, supported in tension and affixed to the frame with sewn and riveted loops. The top of the backrest terminates in solid brass finials that provide a visual counterpoint to the dark wood and leather. These spherical caps emphasize the verticality of the frame and offer a reference to classical decorative motifs, subtly hybridizing tradition and modernism.

The design recalls the form of a director’s chair but is elevated through the use of noble materials and precise construction. As a foldable seating solution, these chairs exemplify both elegance and portability, making them suitable for both domestic and representational use. They are also evidence of Lindström’s architectural sensibility—he is better known for his work in urban planning and structural design, notably the iconic Kuwait Towers—here translated into furniture as spatial and structural clarity.

Each chair measures 60.5 cm wide, 56 cm deep, and 98 cm high (23.8 x 22 x 38.6 inches). The seat height is 41 cm (16.1 inches), and the arm height is 63 cm (24.8 inches). The set is in excellent condition, with minimal signs of use and a rich, even patina to both the rosewood and brass elements. The leather is supple and shows no structural damage, retaining its tension and integrity.
