Information

This is a pair of easy chairs model “Inca” designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Sweden during the 1960s. The chairs feature a structural frame in dark-stained beech, with leather slings and cushions in brown saddle leather, all secured with a network of brass buckles and stitched straps. The design is both architectural and expressive, reflecting Norell’s distinct approach to modernist seating grounded in comfort, durability, and an exposed construction aesthetic.

The frame comprises cylindrical beech components that interlock through mechanical joinery, giving the piece a modular and somewhat campaign-like appearance. The seating system is suspended using thick leather slings attached by buckled leather straps and reinforced with brass hardware. The deep, removable cushions are amply filled and generously proportioned, offering a relaxed, enveloping seating experience. The backrest is fitted with a cylindrical headrest cushion, adding to the visual layering and ergonomic support.

Arne Norell was a Swedish designer whose work gained international recognition during the mid-20th century. He is particularly known for developing highly comfortable lounge seating that merged traditional saddlery techniques with contemporary design principles. The Inca model reflects Norell’s fascination with transparency of structure, tactile materials, and the artisanal detailing of upholstery and leatherwork.

Produced by Arne Norell AB, a company founded by the designer himself in Småland, Sweden, the chairs embody the studio’s hallmark qualities—robust craftsmanship, high-quality natural materials, and a commitment to comfortable living design. Norell’s works were especially well-received in both Scandinavian and international markets, notably in Germany and the UK during the 1960s and 1970s.

This pair is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use, including heavy patina to the leather, light surface cracking, and minor wear to the frame consistent with age. The original leather remains intact, richly aged, and structurally sound, contributing to the piece’s authenticity and character.

Dimensions per chair: width 95 cm (37.40 inches), depth 95 cm (37.40 inches), height 90 cm (35.43 inches), seat height 40 cm (15.75 inches).
