Information

This rare pair of Ari easy chairs with matching stools was designed by the Swedish designer Arne Norell and produced by his own company, Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden, during the 1960s. The design exemplifies Norell’s approach of combining expressive forms with practical construction, using visible structural elements as an integral part of the aesthetic.

The frames are executed in chromed steel, formed into sweeping curves that support the seat and emphasize the low, reclining posture of the chairs. The metal is complemented by the original black leather, which is heavily patinated and displays characteristic signs of age, with surface wear and creasing consistent with decades of use. The cushions are stitched into horizontal channels, producing a structured yet soft seating surface, while the cylindrical headrest is secured with straps and buckles, echoing the functional detailing Norell often employed.

The stools mirror the design language of the chairs, with the same chromed steel frames and leather upholstery, allowing them to serve both as footrests and as standalone seating elements. This modular aspect reflects Norell’s versatility as a designer and the Scandinavian tendency toward adaptable, human-centered design solutions.

The Ari model has become one of Arne Norell’s most recognized works, celebrated for its sculptural presence and comfort. As part of the Scandinavian mid-century modern movement, it combines high-quality materials, exposed construction, and a relaxed silhouette, qualities that have contributed to its enduring relevance.
