Information

The Inca model, designed by Arne Norell in the 1960s, is one of his most recognizable and enduring furniture designs. This pair of easy chairs with matching stools was produced by Arne Norell AB in Sweden and demonstrates his characteristic approach of combining generous comfort with robust yet elegant construction.

The frames are made of solid beech, constructed in a way that highlights visible joinery and structural honesty. Brass fittings and buckles secure the cushions and straps, a technical detail that also serves as a defining aesthetic element of the model. The upholstery is in brown leather, richly patinated and shaped over time through use. The cushions are voluminous and softly structured, with a distinctive headrest roll that contributes to the chair’s sculptural and inviting appearance.

Norell’s design philosophy was strongly rooted in Scandinavian modern traditions while also drawing influence from international movements, particularly the Brazilian modernists. The Inca is often cited as an example of this cross-pollination, with its combination of leather, wood, and visible hardware recalling the expressive yet functional approach of South American designers of the period.

This set is in good vintage condition, showing signs of use and a well-developed patina across both the leather and wooden elements. The leather retains its natural surface character, with variations that emphasize its authenticity and age. The wood has matured in tone, and the brass details show minor oxidation consistent with time.
