Information

This pair of easy chairs, model Merkur, was designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden, during the 1960s. They represent a quintessential example of Scandinavian mid-century design, where functionality, comfort, and material quality are at the forefront. Norell, one of Sweden’s most renowned furniture designers, was known for his ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with a modernist sensibility, and the Merkur model exemplifies this philosophy.

The chairs are crafted from dark-stained beech wood, which gives them a solid yet refined structural presence. The frames support generously padded seats, backs, and armrests, all upholstered in cognac brown buffalo leather. The leather is tufted across the backrest and seat, adding a tactile depth and a classic expression to the design. Over the decades, the natural surface of the leather has developed a rich patina, enhancing the warmth and character of the pieces while reflecting their history of use.

The proportions of the Merkur chairs are generous, designed with comfort in mind while maintaining a clean and architectural silhouette. Their deep seats and slightly reclined backs invite relaxation, making them ideal for a reading corner or a lounge setting. The combination of natural materials and timeless form makes them highly versatile, fitting effortlessly into both vintage-inspired and contemporary interiors.

These chairs remain in excellent vintage condition, with only small signs of wear consistent with age and use. They are a fine example of Norell’s legacy and of Swedish furniture craftsmanship from the mid-20th century.

Dimensions are 90 cm wide, 90 cm deep, and 73 cm high (35.4 x 35.4 x 28.7 in), with a seat height of 40 cm (15.7 in)
