Arne Norell sofa

Rare three-seat Ilona sofa designed by Swedish furniture designer Arne Norell in 1971 and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden. The manufacturer’s Norell Made in Sweden label remains attached to the upholstery.

The sofa consists of three connected seating sections supported by an exposed frame of dark-stained beech. Rounded vertical posts and cylindrical horizontal rails form a low, rectilinear structure, while the softly filled cushions create a deliberate contrast with the rigid geometry of the frame. The upholstery is brown leather with variations from dark tobacco to lighter brown in areas exposed to regular contact. Brass buckles and fittings introduce warm, golden-brown metal accents.

The construction is derived from portable safari furniture and related knock-down seating systems. Separate leather support panels are suspended between the wooden rails by stitched loops, adjustable straps and brass buckles. The loose seat, back and side cushions rest within this flexible supporting structure rather than on a conventional upholstered carcass. Norell describes the original Ilona construction as designed for assembly and disassembly, with strong supporting leather holding the wooden frame together without glue or screws.

Its low seat, exposed framework and visible fastening system place the Ilona within Scandinavian modernism of the late 1960s and early 1970s, while its leather suspension and portable construction refer to earlier safari and campaign furniture. Three distinct cushion groups provide separate suspended seating positions, and the open frame gives the large sofa a comparatively lightweight architectural appearance.

Arne Norell founded his furniture company in 1954 and developed a body of work known for combining solid timber frames with leather, metal fittings and visible structural connections. The Ilona was introduced in 1971, the year of Norell’s death. His wife, Britta Norell, subsequently continued the company, which remained based in Aneby as a family-operated Swedish manufacturer.

The sofa measures 220 × 80 × 74 cm, corresponding to approximately 86.6 × 31.5 × 29.1 inches. The seat height is 38 cm, or approximately 15.0 inches.

The sofa is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use. The leather has developed a substantial natural patina consisting of creasing, surface crackling, scratches, rubbed areas and uneven tonal variation. The wooden frame shows minor surface wear, while the brass hardware has acquired some darkening and oxidation.
