Arne Norell sofa

A rare two-seat Ilona sofa designed by Swedish furniture designer Arne Norell in 1971 and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden. The sofa retains a Norell Made in Sweden label, documenting its manufacture.

The sofa is constructed as two individual seating sections within an exposed frame of dark-stained solid beech. Rounded vertical posts and cylindrical horizontal rails form an open structural grid, while a central upright divides and supports the two seating bays. The loose seat, back and side cushions are upholstered in brown leather, with shades ranging from warm tobacco and cognac to darker brown. Rectangular brass buckles and other brass-toned fittings provide contrasting metallic details.

The upholstery is supported by substantial leather sling panels attached to the wooden frame with stitched loops, straps and adjustable buckles. This suspension-based construction allows the leather components and cushions to remain visually and technically separate from the frame. According to the manufacturer, the Ilona was influenced by portable safari furniture and designed so that its wooden frame could be assembled and dismantled, with the supporting leather holding the structure together without glue or screws.

Its low profile, exposed construction and combination of timber, leather and brass place the model within Scandinavian modernism while also referring to campaign and safari furniture. The design avoids a conventional upholstered carcass and instead makes its load-bearing frame, suspension straps and fastenings visible. The contrast between the rigid geometric structure and the soft, loosely filled cushions is a defining feature of the Ilona series.

Arne Norell founded his furniture company in 1954 and became known for seating that combined Scandinavian woodworking with leather upholstery and visible structural detailing. Following his death in 1971, the year the Ilona was designed, the company was continued by his wife Britta Norell and remained a family-operated manufacturer. Norell furniture continues to be made by hand in Aneby, Sweden.

The sofa measures 150 cm wide, 80 cm deep and 74 cm high, corresponding to approximately 59.1 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep and 29.1 inches high. The seat height is 38 cm, or approximately 15.0 inches.

The sofa is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use. The brown leather has developed pronounced creasing, surface crackling, rubbing, scratches, softened areas and natural tonal variation, forming a coherent aged patina. The dark-stained beech frame shows minor marks and wear, while the brass fittings display age-related darkening.
