Arne Vodder & Anton Borg bookcase
This very rare freestanding bookcase and storage unit, designed by Arne Vodder in collaboration with Anton Borg, was produced by Vamo Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian modernism, skillfully combining clean architectural lines with warm materiality and functional versatility.
The bookcase is constructed with a modular design, featuring two tall side units and a lower central element. These components are unified by continuous legs and framing in solid teak, creating a cohesive and balanced structure. The units rest on tapering, outward-angled round legs, contributing to the piece’s light and elevated profile. The teak surfaces exhibit a rich reddish-brown tone, with visible straight grain and occasional flame or cathedral patterns, indicative of high-quality old-growth teak from the era.
The configuration of the piece includes multiple cabinets with sliding doors, open shelving, and drawers. Circular recessed pulls are used throughout, with brass hardware on the drawer handles. The central section houses two drawers and serves as a bridging element between the two larger upright sections. The side units feature asymmetrical layouts of open shelves and closed compartments, offering a mix of concealed and display storage. The craftsmanship is precise, with chamfered drawer fronts, solid teak edging, and exposed joinery throughout the piece.
Vamo Møbelfabrik, a Danish furniture manufacturer known for its superior woodworking, is responsible for the construction of this bookcase. The freestanding design, finished on the reverse, allows the piece to function as a room divider, offering flexibility in placement. This modularity is characteristic of Vodder’s approach to design, where both visual elegance and spatial utility were key considerations.
Arne Vodder (1926–2009), a Danish architect and designer, is known for his refined proportions, soft organic forms, and use of rich woods. A student of Finn Juhl, Vodder brought a sculptural sensibility to everyday furniture and collaborated with prestigious producers like Sibast and Vamo. His partnership with Anton Borg resulted in several notable designs, including modular and freestanding storage systems, which remain highly regarded today.
The bookcase is in very good vintage condition, with minor wear and patina consistent with its age. The wood surfaces retain their depth and original finish, with light scratches and darkening in areas of handling. All doors and drawers function smoothly, preserving the piece’s original quality.
The overall dimensions of the bookcase are 305 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 152 cm in height (approximately 120.1 x 19.7 x 59.8 inches).
