Arne Vodder sideboard
Very rare sideboard model OS29 designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik, Denmark. Introduced in 1958, the model is regarded as one of Vodder’s most refined storage designs and exemplifies the sculptural elegance and exceptional craftsmanship that established him among the leading figures of Danish Modern furniture. The sideboard combines functional versatility with a highly distinctive aesthetic, balancing architectural restraint with carefully considered details that reveal themselves upon closer inspection.
Crafted in richly figured rosewood, the cabinet displays a remarkable grain pattern throughout, with deep reddish-brown tones and dramatic dark veining that animate every surface. The proportions are slender and elegant, elevated on tapered solid rosewood legs that lend the piece a visual lightness despite its generous storage capacity. A raised gallery edge along the top subtly frames the surface and adds a refined architectural detail characteristic of Vodder’s work from this period.
The front is composed of two sliding doors and a bank of six drawers. Particularly notable are the sculpted drawer fronts, each carved with an elongated concave profile that creates a rhythmic pattern across the elevation while simultaneously serving as integrated handles. This sophisticated detail demonstrates the designer’s commitment to reducing hardware and allowing the natural beauty of the material to define the character of the piece. Behind the sliding doors are adjustable shelves providing flexible storage, while the drawers offer practical organization for smaller items.
An especially rare feature of this example is the presence of its original painted sliding doors. Executed in contrasting tones of pale blue and deep blue-grey, they introduce a striking graphic quality that reflects the colour experimentation occasionally employed by Arne Vodder during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The doors are reversible, allowing the cabinet to be displayed with either the painted surfaces visible or the rosewood veneer facing outward, offering multiple visual expressions within a single piece. This adaptability was a hallmark of Vodder’s approach, where practical functionality was seamlessly integrated into the design.
Arne Vodder trained under Finn Juhl and developed a distinctive design language of his own, characterized by organic forms, sophisticated detailing, and an exceptional understanding of wood. His collaboration with Sibast Møbelfabrik produced some of the most celebrated Danish case furniture of the post-war period, much of which was exported internationally and supplied to prestigious governmental and institutional interiors. The OS29 remains among the most desirable of these designs due to its rarity, sculptural drawer fronts, and highly refined proportions.
The sideboard is in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with careful ownership. The rosewood surfaces retain a rich patina and present beautifully, showing only light wear and minor marks. The original painted doors remain well preserved with gentle age-related wear. The drawers operate smoothly and the cabinet retains its excellent overall appearance and functionality.
