Information

This rare pair of Clam easy chairs was designed by Arnold Madsen and produced by Madsen & Schubell in Denmark in 1944. The chairs feature a distinctive low, rounded seat and backrest that evoke the shape of an open clam shell, one of the most iconic lounge chair silhouettes of mid-century Scandinavian design. The frames are constructed from dark-stained birch, with elegantly curved armrests and legs that create a sculptural yet inviting form.

Both chairs have been fully restored and newly upholstered in high-quality natural sheepskin, complemented by cognac leather buttons that add warmth and subtle contrast to the creamy wool texture. The sheepskin gives the chairs a tactile richness and a sense of comfort, while the restoration work ensures they remain structurally solid and true to their original proportions.

Arnold Madsen is regarded as one of Denmark’s most innovative mid-century designers, known for pioneering organic seating forms that emphasize ergonomics and craftsmanship. The Clam chair is considered one of his most celebrated designs, and original pairs in excellent condition are highly sought after by collectors.

Each chair measures 69 cm in width, 83 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height (27.2 x 32.7 x 29.1 inches), with a seat height of 36 cm (14.2 inches). This pair represents a remarkable opportunity to acquire a fully restored and matching set of an iconic Scandinavian design classic.
