Arthur Andersson floor vase
This rare and large floor vase was designed by Arthur Andersson and produced by Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. Hand-thrown in high-fired stoneware, it features a tall, elongated ovoid form with a narrow, slightly flaring neck and rounded lip. The surface is richly decorated with alternating horizontal bands of incised ornamentation—crosshatched, wavy, and textured motifs—interspersed with smooth glazed sections, creating a dynamic yet balanced rhythmic pattern.
The glaze displays a deep, glossy brown with earthy yellow-green tones accentuating the surface relief. This color variation reflects the kiln atmosphere typical of salt-glazed or high-temperature stoneware. The tactile surface and subtle sheen highlight the contrast between incised and glazed areas. The underside bears the impressed “Wallåkra” mark along with the artist’s incised signature.
Arthur Andersson’s work at Wallåkra is noted for its focus on form and material, combining earthy glazes with restrained, rhythmic decoration. Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik, known for its traditional wood-fired kilns and use of local clays, has a long history of producing robust stoneware vessels with distinct regional character.
The vase is in excellent vintage condition with no visible cracks or repairs. Minor wear is present on the base consistent with age and use. The glaze and decoration remain sharply defined and well preserved.
