Arthur Andersson floor vase
This large floor vase was designed by Arthur Andersson and produced by Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted in high-fired stoneware using traditional wheel-throwing techniques, the vase features a broad, rounded body that tapers to a narrower foot and rises to a wide, outward-flaring neck.
The surface decoration consists of alternating horizontal bands with incised zigzag and linear motifs that reveal the natural buff clay beneath, creating a strong graphic contrast with the surrounding glaze. The glaze palette includes dark brown, olive green, and muted blue tones, applied in thin layers to allow subtle transitions in texture and color, especially near the rim and shoulders where the glaze pools slightly. This effect evokes Scandinavian interpretations of vernacular pottery, blending modernist abstraction with artisanal craft traditions.
Arthur Andersson (d. 1978) was known for his robust forms, hand-carved decoration, and earthy glaze palettes developed during his tenure at Wallåkra. The factory, active since the 19th century, employed traditional salt-firing methods and local clays that impart a unique material character to its stoneware.
The vase is in excellent vintage condition, free from cracks, chips, or repairs.
