Arthur Andersson floor vase
This rare floor vase was designed by Arthur Andersson and produced by Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted in stoneware, the vase has a tall cylindrical form featuring a narrow neck with a gently flaring rim and a subtle chamfered edge on the lip. Its exterior is finished with a dark glaze—almost black—with deep brown undertones and a slightly speckled texture that gives it a rustic yet refined appearance. Around the shoulder, an incised decorative band with vertical strokes reveals the lighter clay body beneath, adding visual and tactile contrast to the otherwise minimalist surface.
Arthur Andersson is noted for combining practical forms with expressive, often earthy glazing techniques. His work at Wallåkra aligns with a tradition of robust, salt-glazed stoneware that draws on Swedish functional pottery and the wider European studio ceramics movement. Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik, a longstanding producer based in southern Sweden, is recognized for its enduring artisanal techniques, including traditional wood-fired kilns and local clay usage.
The vase remains in very good vintage condition, with minor, age-appropriate surface wear and no visible cracks or structural damage. The glaze is evenly applied, showcasing its rich tonality and texture.
Dimensions are 42 cm in height and 14 cm in diameter (approximately 16.5 inches high by 5.5 inches in diameter).
