Arthur Andersson floor vase
This rare mid-century stoneware floor vase was designed by Arthur Andersson and produced by Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. The vase features a vertically elongated ovoid form that gently tapers to a narrow rounded shoulder and a small cylindrical neck.
The surface is richly textured with tightly incised vertical lines wrapping rhythmically around the body, accentuating its verticality and tactile quality. The glaze exhibits earthy, subdued greenish-brown tones with subtle celadon and muted olive hues. A distinctive dark, iron-rich glaze ring around the neck interrupts the incised pattern, highlighting the vessel’s mouth and the transition from body to neck. The unglazed foot ring reveals the natural reddish-brown clay body, consistent with traditional stoneware techniques.
Marked underneath with Arthur Andersson’s signature and the impressed Wallåkra stamp, this vase confirms its provenance. It remains in excellent condition without chips, cracks, or repairs, showing authentic firing variations characteristic of handcrafted studio pottery.
Arthur Andersson’s ceramics for Wallåkra blend traditional salt-glazed stoneware methods with modernist sculptural sensibility. Wallåkra’s use of local clay and wood-fired kilns has long produced durable and distinctive stoneware, with mid-century collaborations like this vase marking a unique intersection of craft and design.
Measuring 40 cm in height and 22 cm in diameter (approximately 15.75 x 8.66 inches), the vase carries a sculptural presence suited for interiors appreciating natural materials, texture, and organic form.
