Asea ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp, produced by Asea in Sweden during the mid-20th century, exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and sculptural elegance associated with Scandinavian lighting design of the postwar period. Asea, originally a major Swedish electrical and engineering company, also played a significant role in the production of architectural lighting from the 1930s through the 1960s. Their lighting division was known for collaborating with skilled designers and engineers to create high-quality, visually expressive luminaires that merged industrial precision with decorative flair.
The lamp is constructed in solid brass and features six upward-curving arms symmetrically arranged around a central column. Each arm terminates in a flared brass socket housing a white opaline glass shade. The arms are bent in soft parabolic curves, giving the chandelier a sense of organic movement while maintaining structural symmetry. The floral or crown-like brass collars surrounding the bases of the glass shades add a decorative element that recalls stylized botanical forms, a common motif in Scandinavian decorative arts.
The opaline glass shades are semi-translucent, forming soft conical shapes that widen toward the top. They produce a warm, evenly diffused illumination when lit, contributing to the chandelier’s ambient and atmospheric qualities. The central brass crown detail at the convergence of the arms provides additional visual complexity and balance.
The finish is a warm golden brass with natural patination, showing minimal signs of wear. The lamp is in excellent condition, with well-preserved glass and structurally sound brass elements, reflecting both the quality of the original production and the care with which it has been maintained.
The dimensions are 65 cm in both width and height, which corresponds to approximately 25.6 inches by 25.6 inches.
