Axel Larsson bedside tables
This rare pair of freestanding bedside or side tables was designed by Axel Larsson and produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1940s. The tables are refined examples of Swedish mid-century modernism, combining functional clarity with a rich material palette and detailed craftsmanship.
Each table features a circular form primarily constructed from solid and veneered mahogany, finished in a warm, rich tone that highlights the wood’s natural grain patterns. The quarter-matched veneers on the sides particularly emphasize the careful attention to material selection and composition. The body includes an open shelf above a single drawer, enclosed within a smoothly rounded vertical case. Four tapered, slender legs that subtly curve outward support the piece, lending it a sense of lightness and visual balance.
A distinctive element of these tables is the original circular glass tabletop, inset neatly within the upper rim of the case. The glass is decorated with a grid motif bordered by a dark circular line, introducing a graphic detail that contrasts softly with the organic warmth of the wood. This feature adds a subtle modernist touch while serving a practical purpose as a durable, wipeable surface.
The drawer fronts are painted in a matching green tone and fitted with small brass drop handles shaped in a flattened D-form. These handles offer a restrained metallic accent and are recessed to maintain the smooth cylindrical profile of the tables. The drawers themselves are constructed using dovetail joinery and operate smoothly, reflecting Bodafors’ high standards of craftsmanship during this era.
Axel Larsson (1898–1975) was a significant figure in Swedish design, noted for his work across residential, public, and institutional furniture. His designs balance functional rationalism with sculptural elegance, often emphasizing meticulous detailing and thoughtful material interplay. These tables demonstrate his ability to create pieces that are both practical and visually engaging, offering storage and surface utility within a compact form.
Bodafors was one of Sweden’s foremost furniture manufacturers, recognized for its commitment to traditional joinery and innovative forms in the early to mid-20th century. The label inside the drawer confirms the provenance of this pair.
Each table measures 45 cm in diameter and 55 cm in height (approximately 17.7 x 21.7 inches). Both tables are in very good original condition, with well-preserved glass tops and finishes. They are rare and collectible examples of Swedish design, suitable for both private and curated interiors where timeless form and material integrity are valued.
