Information

This rare and finely crafted pair of freestanding bedside or side tables was designed by Swedish architect and designer Axel Larsson during the 1940s. Produced by the esteemed manufacturer Bodafors, known for its pivotal role in Swedish modern furniture design throughout the early and mid-20th century, these pieces embody a distinctly Scandinavian modern aesthetic, merging functional design with a restrained decorative language.

The tables are constructed from solid mahogany, a durable tropical hardwood that is valued for its consistent reddish-brown tone and subtle, straight grain patterns. Over time, the wood has developed a warm amber-hued patina, enhancing the depth and natural character of the material. The tabletop features a gently beveled profile with raised edge detailing on three sides, giving the piece a slight tray-like functionality while maintaining the clean geometric lines typical of Larsson’s design approach.

Each table includes a single shallow drawer integrated flush with the apron, operated by a subtly recessed pull. Beneath the drawer, an open shelf spans between the tapering legs, offering practical secondary storage. The drawers are lined with a lighter wood, likely birch, and the tables are marked with the Bodafors manufacturer’s label, confirming provenance and authenticity.

Axel Larsson was a significant figure in Swedish functionalist design, active primarily during the 1930s through the 1950s. He contributed to both public and private interior projects across Sweden, including designs for hotels and civic institutions. His work for Bodafors is known for its balance of elegance and everyday usability, with particular attention to material integrity and joinery detail, as exemplified in these tables.

The pair remains in excellent vintage condition, showing minimal signs of wear appropriate to their age. The mahogany surfaces have been carefully preserved, and all structural and functional aspects—such as the drawers and joints—are sound and intact.

Each table measures 53 cm in width, 36.5 cm in depth, and 60.5 cm in height (approximately 20.9 x 14.4 x 23.8 inches).
