Information

This rare pair of freestanding bedside or side tables was designed by Axel Larsson and produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1940s. Each table is constructed in rich mahogany, with brass handles and original glass tops. The circular form is refined and symmetrical, emphasizing the craftsmanship and precision associated with Swedish modern design of the period. The glass tops are lightly tinted and etched with a geometric grid pattern, providing a distinctive contrast to the warmth of the wood below. The combination of materials reflects the Scandinavian preference for tactile variation and understated luxury.

The bodies are finely veneered in mahogany, displaying a deep reddish-brown tone with a natural, even grain. Each table features a single drawer fitted with a brass handle in an organic, sculptural shape, alongside an open shelf section. The drawers retain the original Bodafors label, indicating the manufacturer’s quality and authenticity. The legs are slightly tapered and integrated smoothly into the round frame, a characteristic trait of Larsson’s design vocabulary, combining elegance and structural integrity.

Axel Larsson (1898–1975) was one of Sweden’s most accomplished furniture designers of the mid-20th century, known for his long collaboration with Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors (SMF). His work represents the transition from Swedish Grace to Functionalism, balancing artisanal woodworking with refined, modern simplicity. Bodafors, active throughout the 20th century, was among Sweden’s foremost furniture manufacturers, recognized for its collaborations with leading designers and high-quality production standards.

The tables are in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of age and use consistent with careful domestic use. The finish remains rich and even, and the glass tops show light wear typical of the period. These pieces embody the craftsmanship and material sensitivity that define Scandinavian design of the 1940s, suitable as both functional and decorative elements in an interior.
