Beck & Jung ashtray

This brass ashtray, designed by Holger Bäckström and Bo Ljungberg, was produced under the Ultima brand in Denmark for Diverse Ting AB in Malmö, Sweden. The piece features a compact cubic form with a removable lid adorned by a geometric grid pattern. The intersecting concave and convex surfaces create a visually striking and functional texture, serving as an effective surface for extinguishing cigarettes.

Holger Bäckström and Bo Ljungberg were Swedish designers known for their modernist and industrial design approach, often experimenting with modular structures and repetitive patterns. This ashtray exemplifies their exploration of the relationship between form and function, employing a minimalist yet sculptural design language.

Crafted from solid brass, the ashtray has developed a natural patina over time, which adds depth and character to its surface. The use of high-quality materials and precise construction is representative of Scandinavian modernism’s focus on craftsmanship and material integrity.
